Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation (PM&R), also referred to as physiatry is a branch of medicine concerned with diagnosis, evaluation and management of persons of all ages with muscuIoskeletal injurieş, rheumatİc diseases, pain syndromes and/or other physical or cognitive impairments or disabilities.
The goal of physical medicine and rehabilitation is diagnosis and treatment of diseases affecting the joints and connective tissue (rheumatic diseases) and to assist disabled patients in achieving their maximum physical, psychosocial and vocational potential, on alleviation of pain and to improve quality of life.
Erciyes University Faculty of Medicine Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation was established in 1976 by Yavuz ÖZÜGÜL, MD Division of Rheumatology was established in 1994 by Mehmet KIRNAP, MD and Division of Algology was established in 2011 by Hüseyin DEMİR, MD. All diagnostic and treatment methods in the extent of physiotherapy and rehabilitation medicine are applied in Erciyes University Faculty of Medicine by faculty members, instructors, being in the fırst place, and professional staff of the Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, using modern technologic equipments and systems. Our department is located in Gevher Nesibe Hospital and it provides service to Gevher Nesibe Hospital, Mehmet Kemal Dedeman Hematology-Oncology Hospital, Yılmaz-Mehmet Öztaşkın Heart and Vascular Hospital, Şemiha Kibar Organ Transplant and Dialysis Hospital, Mustafa Eraslan-Fevzi Mercan Pediatrics Hospital which are within Erciyes University Hospitals.The Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation provides comprehensive consultation, evaluation, diagnosis, management and rehabilitative services for rheumatic and musculoskeletal diseases through the coordinated efforts of its physicians and therapeutic services. Our outpatient clinics and outpatient physical therapy and rehabilitation unit are located on the ground floor and inpatient rehabilitation care provided in the 39-bed rehabilitation unit is located on the twelfth floor of Gevher Nesibe Hospital.
Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation doctors (called physiatrists) provide compassionate İnpatient and outpatient rehabilitation care that considers the needs, abilities and bjectives of each patient. Treatment options include physical modalities such as heat or ice, transcutaneous electrical nevre stimulation and therapeutic exercise to improve function.Our methods involve an İnterdisciplinary team that works to increase function, decrease pain and disability, and maximize performance at work, in school, during recreation and in all other areas of life.

Physical therapy is only given to patients prescribed a physical therapy program and considered as necessary by our department's physicians. The frequency and duration of physical therapy treatments vary based on the patient's condition. Physical therapy and rehabilitation practİces are composed of treatments with physical agents / modalities such as heat and cold therapy, ultrasound, phonophoresis, iontophoresis, laser or light therapy, electrical stimulation and TENS, hydrotherapy, traction and therapeutic exercises.
