ENDOCRINOLOGY AND METABOLISM
Department of Endocrinology is composed of an outpatient and inpatient clinic. Three professors and one associate professor and two fellows serve in the department with assistants of Internal Medicine.
Diabetes, obesity, lipid disorders, thyroid disorders (nodular goiter, hypo and hyperthyroidism, thyroid carcinoma), pituitary disorders (pituitary insufficiency, acromegaly, prolactinoma, pituitary adenomas), adrenal disorders (adrenal masses, adrenal insufficiency, Cushing’s syndrome), gonadal disorders (hypogonadism, hirsutism and hyperandrogenemic disorders), calcium metabolism disorders and metabolic bone diseases and neuroendocrine tumours are diagnosed and treated.
Dynamic endocrine tests including insulin tolerance test, glucagon stimulation test, ACTH stimulation and dexamethasone supression tests and various others are carried out in Endocrine Test Unit by an experienced nurse under supervision. Two nurses give diabetes education in the outpatient clinic. Insulin pumps are provided and followed-up. Ultrasound guided fine needle aspiration biopsy of the thyroid, serum and urine osmolarity measurements are also done. There are special rooms for patients who have radioactive iodine ablation for thyroid carcinoma.
Patients are discussed in councils with Departments of Neurosurgery, General Surgery, Head and Neck Surgery, Radiology, Biochemistry and Nuclear Medicine.
