DEPARTMENT OF OPHTHALMOLOGY
Ophthalmology Department was founded by Prof. Dr. Ömer Faruk Ekinciler in 1979 in Hacettepe University Gevher Nesibe Hospital. Currently, department of Ophthalmology is located on 1stfloor B Corridor in Erciyes University Hospital. Academic staff, residences, technicians and nurses give service for diagnosis and treatment of the eye and surrounding tissues’ diseases. Department of Ophthalmology and the outpatient clinic are located on 1st floor B Corridor in Erciyes University Hospital. The inpatient services with 29 beds are located on the 4th floor. Eye surgeries are performed in the ophthalmology operating room department located on the ground floor.Diagnosis and treatment services for diseases associated with eyes, eyelids and surrounding tissues are provided to patients in every stage of life from newborns to geriatric patient groups.Threedevices which determine refractive disorders (myopia, hypermetropia and astigmatism), color vision tests (Ishiara and Farnsworth-Munsell 100 Hue Test), devices measuring intraocular pressure (contact and non-contact tonometer), computer (Humphrey) vision field analyzer, eye surface topographer (Sirius), specular microscopy, confocal microscopy, ocular biometry device, fundus camera and angiography device (fluorescein and indocyanine green), multifocal electroretinography (mfERG) and electrooculography (EOG) devices, visual evoked potential (VEP) testing device, ocular ultrasound and optic coherence tomography devices are available in the department. YAG, argon and diode lasers for therapeutic purposes and a specific laser for photodynamic treatment are available as well. Three operating rooms provide service for surgery, one special intravitreal injection room with 5 beds, 2 facoemulsion (cataract treatment with ultrasound) devices, 2 vitrectomy device, corneal crosslinking device are available. Outpatient Clinic of Ophthalmology consists of 4 examination rooms. Room no.1 is reserved for immediate evaluation of emergency cases (such as accidents, foreign objects in the eye). Diagnosis and treatment services for any type of general eye diseases are provided in the department. When necessary, opinion is requested from the relatedsection for an advance examination. These sections are:
Patients with glaucoma, also known as intraocular pressure, are followed in this section. The section is set up with contact and non-contact tonometers used for intraocular pressure measurement, visual field analyzers using computer-assisted and manual instrumentation, Heidelberg Retina Tomograph (HRT) and retinal nerve fiber layer thickness measurement with optic coherence tomography. Glaucoma is usually controlled with eyedrop medicine. There are two main types of laser surgery (SLT, ALT, YAGiridotomy) to treat glaucoma. They help aqueous drain from the eye. These procedures are usually done in the ophthalmologist’s office or an outpatient surgery center. Glaucoma surgeries such as trabeculectomy, trabeculotomy, goniotomy, canaloplasty, drainage shunts surgeries, Xen implantation are frequentlyperformed in our operating room.
Corneal Contact Lens Refractive Surgery Section
Comprehensive diagnoses and treatments of diseases associated with cornea, the clear outer layer at the front of the eyeball, are given in this section. Topographers for precise measurement of cornea (Sirius), corneal thickness measurement devices (pachymeter), specular microscopy, confocal microscopy, and anterior segment photography recorder are available in the section. Another field of activity of the section constitutes of contact lenses. The unit is involved in selecting and testing appropriate contact lens (soft, rigid, scleral, and cosmetic contact lenses) as well as informing patients with appropriate usage and having them practice. Corneal collagen cross-linking procedure (which uses UV light and a photosensitizer to strengthen chemical bonds in the cornea) is performed for the treatment is to halt progressive and irregular changes in corneal shape known as ectasia. Keratoplasty transplant procedure(in which full-thickness resection of the patient's cornea, followed by placement of a full-thickness donor corneal graft) is performed performed primarily for visually significant stromal opacities, corneal ectasia (such as keratoconus and pellucid marginal degeneration), and infectious or non-infectious corneal ulcerations or perforations.
Congenital deformities affecting eyelids and the surrounding area, deformities caused by accidents, masses large enough to cause visual issues as well as various cosmetic problems developing with old age are addressed and corrected in the department. All types of eyelid hangup surgeries (for drooping eyelids), blepharoplasties, grafting methods as well as recreation of lower and upper eyelid are among the services offered. All types of malignant and benign tumors in the eyelids, eye surface are diagnosed and treated in the section. Lacrimal system surgeries are performed in patients at every stage of life from newborns (probing, lacrimal system intubation) to adult patient groups (dacryocystorhinostomy).
Pediatric Ophthalmology and Strabismus
The most of patients treated in this section are pediatric or adult patients with strabismus. Amblyopia is treated with several methods. Furthermore, treatment is offered for childhood cataracts, intraocular pressure and various congenital abnormalities. Botulinum toxin is also used for the treatment of certain strabismus types.
All types of retina diseases (retinal detachment, vascular diseases, diabetic retinopathy) are treated with medical and surgical methods. Prematurity retinopathy, a disease which occurs in premature births and very low birth weight infants can be treated with diode laser or intravitreal antiangiogenic injection. Intraocular inflammation (uveit) is diagnosed, treated and followed. The relevant units of our hospital work in collaboration for Behcet’s disease. In addition to conventional laser therapies, photodynamic therapy (PDT) has also been initiated for age-related macular degeneration treatment. All types of vitrectomy, decolman surgery and silicon oil injection are performed.
