Department of Pathology serves in the Gevher Nesibe Hospital of Erciyes University's Medical Faculty. There are 6 professors and 5 research assistants in pathology department.
Pathology is a medical department, which is established to put a definite diagnosis of many diseases, especially cancers. Department of Pathology works in three different areas. Diagnosis, research and education. Examination of pathology and cytology materials is the basis of patient treatment and has have significant contributions to clinical research.
The diagnostic works in our department consist of ; frozen section (rapid pathological examination during surgery),in-hospital biopsy , cytology, examination of surgical materials and diagnostic procedures for non-hospital consultation cases. In our department, estimates an average of 40,000 biopsies and cytology materials per year from surgery, gastrointestinal, genitourinary, gynecology, bone / soft tissue, dermatology, pediatrics, chest diseases, otolaryngology-head and neck surgery, neurosurgery and hematology services. Histochemical and immunohistochemical methods used in automatic machines are used in cases that are needed. These processes have diagnostic and prognostic significance. Diagnostic immunofluorescence staining and evaluation procedures are performed in kidney needle biopsies and some skin diseases.
Cytologic examinations are performed for cancer screening and early cancer diagnosis. Gynecological samples, urine, various body fluids are examined in exfoliative cytology. In our department, liquid based thin-prep technology is used for gynecological and non-gynecological materials. The samples sent by various clinics is examined by pathologists and cytopathologists according to characteristics of samples. FNAS ( fine needle aspiration biopsies) widely used in lesions of breast, lymph gland, thyroid, because it is less invasive, cheaper and it takes less time. Materials that obtained by fine needle aspiration cytology is stained by special dyes and examined by pathologists.
One of the works done in pathology department is medical autopsy.
Tissues from the patient with biopsy techniques after surgical procedures and exfoliative cytology and fine needle aspiration cytology are received our deparment after given a number special for spesimen and patients. The brought tissue after the painting in the automatic tissue device and automatic machines after at about 24 hours when it comes to our department., is repaired to examined at the microscope. All of the species have become to our department for examination are examined by the expert patologists for giving the diagnosis. The special decalcification procedures apply for the tissues which have contain the bone tissue. The reports have stored and archived on computers and bound, and also paraffin bloks are belong to the biopsies and all of the microscope slides are stored in the archive. Pathology does various studies to search the factors that effect the reason, the diagnosis and the prognose of various disiase and cancers. In addition to histochemistry and immunohistochemical studies, KRAS, NRAS, EGFR, BRAF, CKİT, PDGF, HPV, ALK, ROS1,EWSR-1, SYT-SSX, BCL2, BCL6, MYC, HER2, 1p19q mutation testing is being studied in the molecular pathology laboratory.
Among the educational activities in our department; there are pathology lessons to medical students, pathology, neuropathology, pathophysiology and cytology lessons in various faculties and also training of pathology residents. There are meetings with Dermatology, General Surgery, Pediatrics, Gastroenterology, Hematology, Pulmonary Diseases and Thoracic Surgery, Pediatric Surgery, Urology, ,Plastic Surgery , Orthopedic Surgery, Obstetrics and Gynecology departments on a regular basis.
